‘Floating world’ draws together work from the last two years, combining recent paintings with works on paper from the series recently exhibited by the Museo della Grafica in Pisa, Italy, and by the National Trust at Flatford Mill in Suffolk. What began in Flatford as a dialogue with ‘Constable country’ has grown into a wider meditation on natural forces; and if the new works continue to dwell as before on landscape and memory, they are also fleeting commentaries on an increasingly wild and unstable present.
After transporting 'Source' from the studio to this luminous high ceilinged interior in The Hague for a Dutch collector I was fascinated to observe the shifting dialogue between image and space generated by the painting's new location.
